Nostrana Rocks the Carso!

Nostrana and E&R wine shop are teaming up for a very special event featuring three winemakers from the Carso, the rocky Italian-Slovenian plateau that rises from the Gulf of Trieste.

Joining us will be three producers that rarely travel and whose wines are rarely seen in Portland. The evening will be split into two parts: a casual osmissa-style tasting will take place in the wine shop followed by a traditional regional meal in the restaurant.

Dinner, including wines $48

SKERK, ZIDARICH AND KANTE ALL THE WAY FROM CARSO—FRIULI, ITALY

MEET THE WINEMAKERS @ E & R’S OSMIZZA

FEBRUARY 15 FROM 5:30-6:30pm

When traveling in the Carso, between Trieste and Slovenia in southern Friuli, be on the lookout for country houses (often wineries) displaying a cluster of branches over their doors or at the entrance to their driveways. They are traditional osmizze (plural of the singular ‘osmizza’) where you can sample not only the local wine, but local cheeses and salumi as well. –cathy whims, nostrana

OSMIZZA NOSTRANA @ E & R WINE SHOP, $15.00 INCLUDES:

8 wines with the winemakers. AND delicious food from Nostrana!

A selection of cheeses from Friuli, Oswaldo’s prosciutto (considered the best producer in the region and supplier to Michelin starred restaurants,  Liptauer fresh cheese spread Baccala in Bianco, La Jota—Trieste’s famous bean and sauerkraut soup

‘Osmizza’ derived from the Slovenian word meaning eight, because in 1784 an imperial decree allowed peasants to sell their excess wine and produce in an unlicensed restaurant for eight days of the year.

DINNER AFTER-PARTY W/ THE WINEMAKERS AT NOSTRANA 7:30 PM

Buckwheat polenta w/ aged ricotta salata, apples & horseradish

Stinco di Maiale – braised pork shank is popular in the Carso and typically served in restaurants from a rolling cart and accompanied by patate in teccia – potatoes roasted in its juices

Gnocchi di Suisine – plum prune filled gnocchi in cinna- mon and brown butter sauce – an iconic dessert in Friuli

$48 for three courses with the wines of Skerk, Zidarich, and Kante. (Gratuity not included.)

Friuli is an amazing region for wine! BUT, its little zone of Carso”—bordering Slovenia above the Adriatic’s cosmopolitan ‘clash of culture’s city; Trieste—is one of the most remarkable wine zones on earth!
